For our algebra unit in math, our teacher wants us to do the following....
Create a math equation based on REAL LIFE. it cant be made up, even if what you make up is something that can be real. you must go online or wherever and find it and turn it into an equation...it has to be real...my teachers examples are all mostly about sports, and for example, batting averages. i get how she gets the batting averages or average scores or whatever, but how do u turn it into an equation.....know what i mean? its kinda hard to explain but i rly hope sumone can help.

I'd go on line to find some statistics of a player you know she likes. See his batting average, total at-bats, and number of hits, then figure out how many consecutive hits he'd need to raise his average to .400. Example: Player X has 120 hits in 356 at bats. Your equation would be (120 + x)/(356 + x) = 0.400 where x = number of consecutive hits

Sports are a good example, here are a few:
-find a bowler's average
-football/yards ran, passed, etc
-baseball batting average (ab/hits) as you mentioned, but also the earned run average or ERA of a pitcher. This is calculated by dividing the number of earned runs by the number of pitches to come up with a three digit decimal. The lower the number, the better the pitcher.

school:
grade point averages
average test score of the class
-Here is one that we used to use a lot in college:
There are a few items necessary for the particular course, class participation, which is weighted at 10 percent of your grade, a term paper, which is weighted at 30 percent of your grade, and a midterm which is weighted at 30 percent and a final exam weighted at 30 percent.
Say you are in this class and you know all your grades the week before the final. Your grades are as follows:
participation 100
paper 95
midterm 87

You also know that you need an A in this class and to get the A you need to have a score (for the whole course) higher than 90.
Given this information, what do you need to get on the final to get an A in the class?

Here is how you would figure it:
participation grade - 100 x .1= 10
paper grade 95 x .3=28.5
midterm 88 x .3 = 26.4
final F x .3 = 0.3F

10+28.5+26.4+ 0.3F=90
solve for F
64.9 + 0.3F=90
648 + 3F=900
3F=252
F=84

You would need to score an 84 to have a 90 or "A" final grade in this class.

Well it's all about reallife problems you might encounter.

Say, you want to buy some hardwood floor panels to replace your own stinky carpets of your living room.

You know the area you need to cover is Xt (t for total) by Yt.

Each hardwood floor panels are Xfp (fp for floor panel) by Yfp in area, and cost, C, amount of money each.

How much would you have to pay to buy the hardwood floor panels?

Equation for this would look like:

Total Cost = C * ((Xt * Yt)/(Xfp * Yfp))

C = Cost of each floor panel
Xt = x length of living room
Yt = y length of living room
Xfp = x length of floor panel
Yfp = y length of floor panel

Now you can explain to you teacher if she asks you anything about the problem.

P = 6T + E1+2E2 + 2S + 3F, where:
P = total points scored by your football team,
T = number of touchdowns made
E1 = number of 1-point extra point tries made
E2 = number of 2-point extra point tries made
S = number of safeties scored
F = number of field goals made
