I live in a VERY hot area and I'm afraid the belt would dry out and crack. Our garage gets super hot in the summer. Is it rubber? Nylon? Thank you! Also, is it worth it to install it yourself? Lowes charges $129 to install.

you can do it , very easy, just read all the paper work .
it can only go on one way,
if you use a silicone based , primer , it will not dry out ,so fast
this has nothing to do with heat , its friction that wear them out . you mite want ot re consider and use a chain driven belt , just oil it ,
if you get stuck , ask your local handy man to do this, takes about 45mins, worth about 4 hours of your time lol

its a combination of rubber, and nylon threads, there's a number on it for replacement, you can do it your self,
get a can of belt dressing, and spray it once a month, [belt]
