While I have no doubt that Doc will chime in eventually, here is Cider's take:

You Are Your Own Worst Critic. Give yourself a break. You are not the best judge of you. Leave that to your Director.

Why do you hate singing? It is fun.

You state that you are not the best, but that is not the point,is it? Are you really terrible? The Worst Singer Ever? Tone Deaf? When Cider says "A" do you sing "D"? Nobody (with the exception of a girl I met in Moline, but that is another story) is that bad.

As far as "emotion" in your delivery: piece of cake. Believe what you are saying. The mechanics take care of themselves.

Look Me In The Eye And Tell Me The Truth. THAT is Acting.

that cider guy really knows me, don't he? He is also right about you being your own worst critic. We all hate our own voices. I am no singer, as bad as that girl in Des Moines or whereever, though I was paid to sing a small role in an opera once! LOL Anyway, Cider is right, don't worry about it. Even though you are hating the singing right now, try to understand this about it, the reason characters sing in a musical is that their emotions swell to the point that ordinary talking will not express their feelings adequately. Now you can kill two birds with one deep breath. Your singing is the expression of your emotions, and if you do what actors are supposed to do, play and have fun doing the role, you just let loose with it, however the singing turns out. Just yell to the music in character. I will never ever forget Paul Lynde's performance of the song "Ed Sullivan" in BYE BYE BIRDIE which I saw live in about 1957. It was just magnificent! Not because it was world class singing, but because it was an emotional response by the character he was playing done perfectly. FUN! Oh, and Cider? This is a musical, it requires more than looking in the eye and telling the truth, it requires 'performance' which is to say exaggeration that makes the show big enought to fill the auditorium and delight everyone in the audience. It ain't a movie, Mr. Cagney! So, dear questioner, exaggerate the character, aren't Suess's characters all exaggerations? Belt it out there and have a blast!
