Julia believed in keeping the small rules so that you could break the big ones. Like the Party and Big Brother, she had a good reputation on the outside, despite what she did "away from the cameras". How does this relate to society today?

I think this train of thought is common in the world today. If your average people see a person obeying "the little rules", they would never assume that they would break "a big one".
Its kind of like these people get put on a pedestal, for example a strait A student or a gifted athlete. Its like the world just doesn't want to believe that someone who appeared this good on the outside could do anything really wrong.

It reminds me of today's politicians, who'll kiss a few babies on-camera whilst legally robbing the parents blind behind the scenes.

Had to read that book in 8th grade. I hate it and I can't remember a thing about it.
