Try Audie Murphy. He was one of the most decorated heroes of WWII in real life, who then went on to make war movies in Hollywood back in the fifties.
Edit: good point, re Audie Murphy...still, there's no denying his heroism and his being co-opted as a propaganda tool would make for an intesresting essay....I would have thought vets would be more fed up with someone like John Wayne, who never even served.
I'm sorry to hear about your husband, btw. No matter how big or small the campaign, wars always take a toll on those who wage them. I hope he finds peace one day.

Bear in mind, Audie Murphey was hated by veterans after he started doing movies. He was a hero in the war, but vets disliked how he made money off his tour.
My great aunts, uncles, grandparents, cousins, were all pround to serve in WW2. My husband was more scarred...literally, from being in Grenada. He will still scream in the middle of the night, and cry at war movies. He saw his best buddy get his head blown off. He has scars on his head and his legs, and he needs a knee replacement. For a little known war, it affected him greatly.
