It has been a very dry summer, but the acorns are
large. We are being bombarded. Very unusual.

My husband's grandfather certainly seemed to think that a heavy acorn crop (among other indicators) did indeed point to a harsh winter. He farmed in Michigan for 80 years. Another indicator of a harsher upcoming winter is animals growing denser than normal winter coats.

no it simply means the summer has been hotter than usual. Winter may or may not be harsh - it probably will be given recent trends of greater extremes. The truth is that an early spring and rapid warming after a harsh winter will cause greater oak flowering and setting of acorns and this is what you're seeing, ie a showing of the past conditions rather than future ones. Unfortuantely the winter will be harsh becuase of global warming but its got very little to do with your acorns except that they are a sign of a previous harsh winter and lmild spring

I have heard an over abundance of sunflowers creates a wet winter, never about acorns. We'll see, maybe you just got the government a new grant for a 50million dollar research project. Ha ha

AS FOR THE HARSH WINTER, I'VE HEARD THAT WHEN THE SQUIRRELS START EARLY IN THE FALL COLLECTING THE ACORNS, THAT IT WILL BE A BAD WINTER. NOT SURE ON THE SIZE.

It suggests that the growing conditions were favorable during the spring and summer. How could it possibly have any thing to do with what the weather in the future will be? Did you think about that question very long?
