I'm trying to make it to my dad's house so he can have my car repaired. The entire cooling system is pretty much not working. I was planning on driving with the heater on since that seems to help. I am just scared of getting stranded half way there. I am waiting till night time so its cool and there will be no traffic.

Thanks for your help. I made the drive home without the car overheating.

If it is not heating to the point where it is boiling and blowing coolant out you can do it. You say the heater helps so that is an indication it's not completey plugged. You should carry 5 gallons of water, or as much as possible. if the temp gage gets to max. temp. stop and turn off engine immediately. Wait till it cools, might take an hour, make sure it's cool then remove rad. cap and add water. As long as it doesn't max out on temp. you can make it.

make sure that the coolant tank is full and bring at least one bottle with you or more depending on how much you go through and how few and far between the rest areas are. i wouldn't suggest the drive but if you can't get it towed out there or fixed before the drive this is what i suggest. also, make sure you have your cel phone charged and the number to AAA or a tow service or friend just in case.

Have you checked the water level? If you have enough water it may be the thermostat. Good luck. I would get it towed if your not sure. Its better to be safe than having to do more engine work than neccasary.
