Mostly I remember my mother making "us up" in one way or another....no store-bought costumes back then, which was actually more fun. Home was way upstate NY, so it was always pretty cold and you had to move fast! There was a wonderful older couple just a few doors up the street and each year he would roast peanuts and hand them out in little paper bags, all nice and warm. Even then I had a major sweet tooth, so I really didn't mess around with Halloween tricks.....my main objective was to get candy and lots of it!! Up till just recently I really got into decorating the yard and house up big for all the neighborhood kids, complete with spooky music, but each year less and less are trick-or-treating and they're now going to special parties at the local churches. Miss the old days when people weren't afraid to let their kids go house to house like we grew up doing.

All my Halloweens were fun when I was a kid. The only time I couldn't go trick or treating was when I had tonsillitis. When I got into my teens, my best friend and I had fun by making a scary "dummy" out of clothes stuffed with leaves. We had fun scaring other kids with it. I also remember one time we went trick or treating and this house had a real looking coffin by the front door. After we got our candy, the coffin opened, and Count Dracula jumped out and started chasing us! He actually chased us down the road a little ways. It was fun but a little scary, too. But that's what it's all about. After I married and had my daughter, the fun continued! Now that she's grown, I really miss taking her out on Halloween night. For the past 4 years she's been working at a haunted house, where people pay to walk through and get scared. She has a huge blast! My favorite candy to get is always chocolate candy bars, especially Almond Joy and Reeses Peanut Butter Cups. And those are usually what I give out, also.

When I was a child, Hallowe'en was my very favourite time of year, My family had a store ,so the candy thing wasn't what was exciting for me. It was staying out after dark and back in the 50's ,we wore masks over our eyes so we were in disguise and trying to guess who everyone was ,was fun. my gramma used to say if you could see the moon ,you would see a witch flying across with her broom. When I think of the time we wasted staring at that darn moon! My favoutite candy was homemade fudge . I never liked the candy kisses, so my brother and I would trade things with our candy all spread out on the floor. It was scary and fun at the same time. We never had to worry about anyone tampering with our treats, and alot of people made homemade treats. I miss that .

They always had a party at our grade school. The had all kinds of games, cake walks, refreshments and all your friends were there. It was so much fun!

My favorite candy was the 'penny candy'. I loved all the different little pieces of candy and suckers and the bubble gum. I liked to give all different kinds out too.

My mom threw me a Halloween party when I was 10 or 11. She decorated the entire house and yard. All the kids were taken into the dining room and blindfolded. Mom had things to put their hands into like eyeballs(peeled grapes), intestines (speghetti), guts (hard Jell-o), etc. It grossed them out. She had dummys in the bedrooms hanging from the ceilings and ghosts floating through the hallways out of light weight fabric and fans. My mom was very creative and never did anything half way. I have movies of this on 8mm film!

When I was a kid, holloween started about 3 weeks before holloween...we would spend hours rounding up corn ears in the fields left over from the picking, shuck it into bags, and roam about town throwing corn all over people's porches. And of course we did the big nasty, crap in a bag, put it on a porch, light it on fire and yell "fire" to watch the owner come out and stomp it out...I am surprised we didn't end up in jail..but we didn't. Then there was the year we good spray paint and a stencil, changed all the 35 mph signs in town to read 85 mph. And there was the year we hoisted an outhouse up onto the flag pole of the HS...Looking back on this, I think we had an evil streak a mile wide up our backs.

Well, all my memories were good ones. I remember that I loved my leopard suit with the tail as my favorite costume and my favorite candies were MaryJanes, Bit O'Honey and Sugar Daddy's. It is a wonder I still have most of my teeth. lol

Not in my youth, but in my 'old age.' I have an XXLarge rain suit (fits over warm clothing for when I'm riding my m/c). I put it on, stuffed the arms and the chest with newspaper, pulled it up over my head, blew up a balloon and put the balloon in the hood part on top of my head, then put a JASON MASK over the balloon. Then I put on my 'cow patty boots' and left them kind of hanging at an angle as I sat on a lawn chair. I put on oversized welders' gloves. Then my wife hung a sign around my neck that said PLEASE ONLY TAKE ONE PIECE, and placed a huge bowl of candy in my lap.
When a kid would come to take a piece, I would raise my arm. HE HE
One dad said, "It's nothing but a dummy, see," and he squeezed my paper filled arms. The son didn't want ANYTHING to do with me. When dad reached for a candy, my arm raised up. He thought there was a wire and waved his hand over my arms looking for a wire. I scared A WHOLE LOT of kids that night. Two of the girls in my Sunday school class came. I scared Melissa (3rd grade) so bad, she peed her pants (she told me later). Her cousin Tori wouldn't even come close.
That evening (it was very warm) so after 8 p.m., I went inside to take a shower and my wife went to the store. As I came out of the shower with just a towel on (mind you, I'm a Sunday school teacher for 3rd/4th grade kids), the doorbell rang. Thinking it was my wife with some bags of groceries, I went and opened it. There stood Melissa, her mom, her cousin Tori and Tori's mom! They came by to say hi and tell me what a great job I had done in my costume. WHOOPS! "I'll be right back, " I said, and went and put on a t-shirt and shorts. They really thought that was SOOOO funny! They all came in and were there when my wife came back later. And they all had a good laugh again.
Seems when M & T would stop by (their uncle lives 2 streets over and they would come over when they'd go to his house) I was either getting ready to take a shower, in the shower or just had just come out. Now, they're in their late teens and it's not 'cool' to visit their old SS teacher, although I always get a hug fromt them at church.
