Indeed, "castor" is the French word for "beaver"! So leave it to castor!

According to this article, Castor canadensis is the scientific name for beavers. Apparently, beavers have a castor gland near the base of the tail which is used for scent-marking and which "gives the beaver its characteristic odor."
