Is it true that the lead guy sold his soul to the devil? I heard that through the grape vine. I was just curious if there was any truth in it.

No - It is an urban myth.

It came about because ELO put secret messages on one of their tracks.

In the old days when music was on vinyl record you could spin the disc backwards and hear " Music is reversable but time is not, turn back turn back".

Somehow this mushroomed into links with the devil. ELO even called one of their albums " Secret Messages" because of all the hype raised.

One thing that is true about this group is that it evolved out of the late 1960s-early 1970s British group The Move. In fact, one of their hits "Do Ya" was a remake of a song that The Move had recorded several years earlier. Member Jeff Lynne went on to become part of the late 1980s group Traveling Willburys.

ELO?! Led Zeppelin maybe, but...ELO? Makes you wonder what they would've sounded like without all that satanic influence (I've always liked Randy Newman's song about them--"Story of a Rock and Roll Band"--snide bastard that he is).

When I saw ELO in concert, he was stoned, but I think he still had his soul.
