Tomorrow is another Friday night out with the girls, while they drink Pina Coladas ---- and I watch.
I will be 21 on December 20th, and most of my friends have turned 21 by now. They go out for nights on the town, most of the time I can't go at all because I am "too young" to step inside the doors of any alcohol serving facility. When I can go, I am forced to be the designated driver.
I don't believe that drinking alcohol is required to have fun, but it is frustrating that my friends - who are litterally 2-4 months older than me - are considered, by law, so much "older and more responsible" than I am, that they are allowed to enter whatever public place they want, and I am treated like a 15 year old.
Yes, I realize "it's the law", so I do not need any comments from that perspective, or saying that I need to "grow up and deal with it". I am dealing with it, but sometimes I just don't know if I agree with it.

Yep.

Years ago the drinking age was 18. 18 year olds showed that they could not handle the responsibility of alcohol. Therefore, the drinking age was raised and alcohol related fatalities dropped.

If the legal drinking age were lower, then you'd see even more teenagers drinking illegally. This way, it hopefully restricts underage drinking to at least slightly older teenagers. I mean, think about it--if the drinking age is 21 actually means that 17 year olds are drinking, then what would happen if, say, 18 year olds were allowed to drink?

Would that mean that fourteen year olds would routinely break the law? Would kids show up drunk to high school?

Yes, there are issues with the drinking age in the US--most places either have a lower age or don't allow alcohol to be sold at all.

It causes some problems.

But setting the limit at 21 has reduced drinking among people who are even younger and reduced many drunk-driving accidents among very young drivers who are already taking plenty of risks, statistically speaking.

And why should you not face the same inconvenience as other 20-year-olds? Waiting around to turn legal is a rite of passage, you know.

No, but I understand it. MADD drove the legislation through Congress due to the large amount of alcohol related driving fatalities in the 18-21 year old set.

If you want a solution, we need to think about public transit on a larger scale.

No, that's BS. the u . s . has the toughest eating/buying age interior the completed worldwide. lots of the worldwide has it set at sixteen for beer/wine and 18 for demanding stuff. Albania would not also have a eating age, China merely made one some years in the past (18).

You are not being treated like a 15 year old, you are being treated like a 20 year old. Stop whining. Right now you can work within the system to change the law if you feel it needs to abe changed.

I understand your feelings.
In my country, Costa Rica, the legal age drinking limit is 18 years old, which I don't agree with either.
I think 20 years old would be good enough.
I'm sorry about your embarrasing moments :(
Have fun on your b-day! You deserve it! :D

I sympathize with thee, but I still have to go
along with the current law. BUT, BUT, it is a
cotton picking shame that an eighteen year
old can fight for his country and come home on
leave and not be able to go to a bar and have
a beer.
