I doubt its a fear to most men but some may not enjoy saying it because it makes them sound weak. Others don't feel the need to say it because everything is going alright in their relationship or are too busy dealing with other things in life to really remember. When it boils down, it just depends on the individual. Who knows, the woman might not actually care about their man saying "the dreaded 3 words", probably because they can express their love and trust by actions and other means.

I'm 46 and have lived many places in the world, I have never heard of that particular saying Friend.
