Maybe some friends were joking, but in some ways, I kind of agree with them in some areas in which I have been referred to as "square". I don't drink (More on this later), I don't smoke (Which they don't do, and it's a good thing), or get high (Which they went through a phase of doing, but not anymore). But what I am wondering is how could no consumption of alcohol or at least opposing to the idea of drinking alcohol make one square. Also, I don't like to follow too much of today's new trends, whether it's in fashion, music, etc. Is it really to wrong to stick to one's own instincts and not conform to anything? I choose not to drink for my own personal reasons. I never had a drink, and still don't intend to. I don't believe in this stupid social rule in which drinking helps one loosen up and all this other nonsense. Of course, in the end, some do respect my choice. I really have no intention to drink or follow things of now. Well, I guess I'm out of touch with society then.

It's absolutely fine. My friends think I am weird and dorky sometimes, and to me, that's okay. I don't have the desire to own a cellphone, party it up at college, wear the trendy outfits, and be "cool". I like who I am, I do what I want to, I wear what I want to, and if they think I'm wrong for that, maybe they should take a look at their life and see if they really want to be who they are pretending to be. I'd rather be happy being who I am than miserable for being someone I'm not just so a bunch of people will like me. It's great that you don't want to drink, I don't either. There is nothing wrong with the choice you'd made, you should be proud that you haven't given in to them just so they'll accept you more. Good for you. =]

I partly in the same boat. But I finally realized that not being in touch with society is a good thing. Society is dumb. Popular music is crappy, popular shows are crappy, and if you notice, it seems like a lot of people do things just to get other people's approval. Listen up: Don't ever feel bad for not being the "norm". Those norm people can't think for themselves and spend their lives conforming. Don't do it. I used to feel real down for not being the "norm". But you'll soon realize that the truly cool people are the ones who do think for themselves and don't need anyone else's approval.

Generally speaking, when a person is doing the RIGHT thing he gets ridiculed by his peers because they are uncomfortable with the knowledge that what they are chosing to do is not really right, or at least not smart....drinking to excess, trying illegal drugs, smoking....these things really aren't good for a person or smart and they know it.

Nothing wrong with square and what those people think is cool as kids won't be as adults.
