Ohio Redneck

It depends on where in Ohio. I live in a rural area near Cincinati and I know many people who have a "twang" and will admittedly call themselves rednecks if you ask. But where I'm from we are hard workers and that's what we're known for. Teenage boys where I live exaggerate this "twang" and make a point to act redneck. They're annoying and give northern rednecks a bad name. I know one particular boy in my high school who makes sure everyone knows he is a redneck by being stereotypical which includes being racist, hardcore twang, always wearing working boots, excessive camoflouge, other things, along with the rest of his friends. But that's all they have going for them. BUT people like my father are civilized, good people who work for a living and are well-respected. Guess what? He has an accent but he doesn't own up to it like a trophy. That is probably because everyone else who lives here also has it. I never noticed until I heard we were rednecks once, then I began noticing. Bye.

I have lived in Ohio my entire life and never heard of this. I do live up near Lake Erie next to Cleveland which is one of the most urban areas. Ohio is usually considered intensely bland and very Midwestern and fairly urbanized and industrialized. The term redneck is used to insult farmers on occasion, but I have know several farmers and didn't ever feel they were anything less than very hard working.

Southern Ohio, probably. I live in Indiana, and they call the people who live in southern Indiana rednecks, also.
