When they reached Moscow they found it had no resources to sustain them and the Russian roads were too bad to supply them from the west.

Napoleonic Armies were good in living of the land one their ways to battle. The Russians took advantage of their wide land and winter. The Russians burned every city before the French Army's arrival, including Moscow. So, when winter had arrived and French were on their way back they lacked logistics. And there was nothing the wide land could provide!

The same reasons that many dictators lose, for their short slightness of the enemy determination to survive. Napoleon failed to supply his troops with winter equipment, enough food, He thought to live off the land. Russian troops fought a delaying fight and pulled back slowly until winter was the strongest. Their attack was then against a starved, frozen, and poor morale stressed French army.
