My wife's car is a 2001 Mazda Protege and now with about 95,000 miles on it I have to say that it's been a really reliable car. We changed the timing belt and had the A/C serviced this year but other then that this car has had no major repairs - ever. I fully expect it to go another 100,000 miles with no problem and with very little expense.

Now, my 1999 Pontiac Grand Am on the other hand... the expenses have been in the thousands of dollars. It's a sportier car then the Protege and it's fun to drive but it has been very high-maintenance.

In all probability we'll buy another Mazda for our next vehicle. Mazda now has vehicles out there that are not only reliable but damn sporty too. The best of both worlds....

Proteges are great cars. Consumer Reports called it " An Overlooked Gem" in their used car buyers guide and Motor Trend and Consumer Guides called it, "Mazda's Best Kept Secret." This is the successor to the Mazda GLC and 323 models. Each were very dependable cars and the Protege is no exception.

You're getting it for less than a Corolla or Civic because it is.... overlooked. It even rates on par and sometimes exceeds the Civic and Corolla in terms of driving excitement, and quality.

The others are good cars but let's be honest, Civics are strongly overrated. That's why the resale value is so high. Not that they are exceptional cars and they certainly aren't bad cars- just overrated. Protege offers all of qualities found on the Civic and Corolla, but for quite a bit less. I know this because I've owned all three. In fact, in stock form, my Protege ES was more enjoyable to drive than the Civic EX I owned at the time. You can't go wrong with this one.

P.S. Mazdas have non-interference motors; meaning if the timing belt breaks, you won't run the risk of damaging the engine. Just get the belt replaced and drive away. Let timing belt break on any Honda Civic..... Can you say engine rebuild?

The Mazda Protege is Mazda's most reliable car. It is just as reliable as the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla. I have a 1996 Mazda Protege with 128,500 miles on it and it used to be a rental car. I drive it very hard. It never had any engine problems in its life so far. My protege gets up to 39 miles per gallon. The newer ones are not as economical, but you should still get very good gas mileage. I know someone who had a 93 protege with over 200,000 miles on it and he never had any mechanical problems.

the upper guy, the v-techmonkeyhead,
i own a mazda GLC 745HP ill beat any Honda any time any where :D

i got mazda sice very old models and for me they are the best brand ever to be made i have two 2002 models and they are very good cars, cheap to fix, dependable and very fun with a 2.0L engine 130HP they have good power, if you decide to buy it do a full tune up and timming belt change is also recomended for any used car

the car you are looking has 4 disc brake, sunroof, all power up and fog lamps so is the top of the protege line sedan

i have a 2002 astina, which is just the hatchback version of that model, i bought it brand new and have never had any problems, only had to put petrol in it, change the tyres, and get regular services.
my advice is to find the one the has the least kilometers and a good service history !!
good luck

It's probably decent, if that's the price range you are looking in. Depends on the mileage and maintenance records.
