Tow idenical cannons are aimed at each other, ir shells fired simutanously at exactly the same speeds. Ignoring wind resistance for a moment, will hey hi or miss?

Gravity will pull both connonballs to the ground. So they will not hit each other.

That really depends on how far apart the cannons are, how high the cannons are, and how fast the shells are moving when they're initially fired. Unless there's some clever trick I'm missing here, I don't think you have enough information to answer this question.

how is this a math brain buster? For one thing, how far apart are the cannons? How much else are we ignoring? Are we ignoring the fact that the two cannons probably have different surface roughness in the barrel?

The only thing busting my brain is how vague this question is!

if the 2 cannons are at different heights, they can hit each other, because the paths of the cannonballs are not symmetrical.

if they are at the same height, the paths of the cannonballs will be symmetrical and the cannonballs will hit each other in the middle.
