Political nihilism is not caring about the political process. How can it be accomplished? Here are the ingredients:

1. Politicians who are lacking in sincerity (they just do & say things to get votes).
2. Politicians with no real connection to everyday people, who think they know what's best for those same people.
3. Entrenched political parties that have rigged election laws to make it too difficult for 3rd parties to get a foothold.
4. A media that plays to the politicians' fondness for soundbites and also collaborates in ignoring 3rd parties.

In short, pretty much exactly the system we have now. 50% turnout on election day is considered decent. Those who don't vote, abstain because there is no one they feel passionate enough about to go to the trouble of voting for. That, I think, is not the fault of a cynical electorate, but of the politicians and the system that MADE the voters cynical to begin with.

Personally, I used to regard politics and government as a necessary evil. The older I get, though, the more I question the "necessary" part.
