According to Wikipedia: "Family is a Western term used to have denote a domestic group of people, or a number of domestic groups linked through descent (demonstrated or stipulated) from a common ancestor, marriage or adoption.

A family may be defined specifically as a group of people affiliated by consanguinity, affinity, and co-residence"

To me it seems like at one time, family was the core of our society, but we have become distracted by other things....keeping our family together isn't quite as important, having a family to have a child isn't as important, staying true to our family isn't as important. We want it now and we want it easy and it's our RIGHT to do whatever we want....and eventually, as Family become less and less important, and our own personal happiness and fulfillment (whatever the heck that really is) and personal pleasure and desires become more important, the family will desitegrate and our purpose will be lost and there will be CHAOS.

The bedrock of society throughout the ages has been the family unit. Otherwise the babies would have been discarded - they are so much work for the first 3 or 4 years!

Without a family unit, there is, as the writer said - CHAOS. Our Judeo Christian ethic stipulates a man and a woman and the offspring. The elders are incorporated for a bettering of the system, since there is wisdom and experience to draw from.

I lament the loss of the standard 'family' with its mother, father and children. I heartily hold to the 2 gender home, and fear the the 2 mommies/2 daddies homes will endanger the fabric of our civilization. Sadly. Badly.

IMHO

Well, I might just point out that the family can be a very oppressive institution.

The need to be part of a family has not diminished, and I don't think folks have turned their backs on the traditional family in favor of self-fulfillment. Rather, some have sought different types of family connections because the traditional family is very often oppressive.

Husbands oppress wives. Wives oppress husbands. And parents oppress children. Of course, it's a matter of degree, but I know of many family members who are very destructive to one another, and who wants to be part of that.

And a lot of this disrespect between family members comes straight out of, you guessed it, tradition.

I know many people who are just looking to improve on the theme, and I think that's a good thing.
