mass is equal to energy

if you add energy to an object, then are you also adding matter? where does this matter come from and go?

Yes, mass and energy are related by E = MC^2

When you add energy to an object, its mass does increase but no more atoms are present. Each atom gains some mass. Each proton and electron gains some mass. This mass comes from the energy you added. If you take away some energy, the mass will decease. The mass doesn't disappear. It is present in the energy you took away.

Remember, adding energy does NOT increase the amount of matter. It increases the mass of the matter already there.

This is a good question that really has no answer at this time because no one really knows. Mass is equal to energy according to the current theories but that could change in the future as more is discovered about how the universe works.
