Jack is the typical dreamer who gets obsessed with an idea, not realizing the consequences for those around him. Shakespeare wrote about many characters like that, as are some others you might recognize such as Dr. Victor von Frankenstein.
That is to say, Jack's obsessive desire to experience something new resulted in disaster...but out of it he found new sense of purpose. He does the wrong things for the right reasons.
Also, you could note Sally's dichotomy--in one sense she is incredibly immature because she wants to be free of the Doctor like a child wanting to grow up too quickly, but on the other hand her maturity and stability help Jack rescue Santa from Oogie Boogie.

maybe the concept jack had of christmas. his idea of what christmas is compared to what it really is, and then his relization of what it's all about.
