My friend has been passed over twice within a year for a dayshift position even though seniority is definitely his. What recourse is there?

There's no blanket rule. If he had a union, then the union contract would probably address bidding and seniority. Otherwise he has no right to a dayshift position unless the employer wants to give it to him.

A lot can depend on his job classification, and what is needed where at the time. Let's say your friend is classified as a AA employee, and the day position is for an AAA employee. The difference being the skills involved in each classification. If something like this is not the case, then he needs to speak with his union rep.

There are some disagreements, even among devout Roman Catholics, regarding whether or not the Pope really speaks for God. Considering some of the things various popes have done, it's pretty ridiculous to think that being the pope and sitting on the throne while wearing a funny hat makes you infallible.
