But to answer you question specifically, college may not be the place to get prepared to be an airplane mechanic (though some colleges may offer this training). Aircraft mechanics falls into the realm of vocational training...more the realm of community colleges, vocational (trade schools), and private schools.

The best advice I can give you is this: Join the military! Whether it be the Air Force or the Navy, it doesn't matter.

They will train you. You will get hands-on experiance. You can be out in 4 years, and enter the private sector with a great background, and a G.I. Bill to help pay for any other schooling.

I loved my time in the Navy. At least keep an open mind, as another option.
