I live in the States and I call it football.
The only time I think I use the term soccer, is to refer to the Fox Soccer Channel ...

It's not only Americans, Australians also call it soccer...and I'll let you in a history lesson...the word 'soccer' originated from association football as Johnny Bravo mentioned. More precisely it came from 'assoc' (from the word association) and if you say it backwords its 'socca' and then just changed it to 'soccer'.
So that will explain how the word 'soccer' came about.

yep its rite down irritating. they have changed evry thin when dey arrived at the new world i.e america. cant (pronounced with a as in cart) bcame cant (like apt). an accent developed twisting all the words. i think modern day americans are not responsible fer dis but the older immigrants wanted 2 cr8 USA as a seperate country with no relation 2 britain. i think dis is the reason
still. ppl plz call the beautiful game football

well if you say soccer, you aren't going to confuse it with any of the other various forms of football. and it's not limited to the US , australia calls rugby union, league and Australian Rules football
also the word soccer originated in England as a nickname for association football. and the world's longest serving magazine, published in london is World Soccer
http://www.worldsoccer.com
dont know what the big deal is about it. it's not offensive . if you go to non-english speaking countries they have different names for it:
kaduregel (jewish), calcio (italian), nogomet (croatian), chook gu (korean) . still the same sport no matter what language you are talking

It's Friggin AMAZING how heated arguments spill over just over how peole call a sport.
Call it what you want, jeez some people just cry over the fact that we here in the us call it soccer, I call it football though.
And even if america isn't the best at the worlds game we still have the best
Baseball,Hockey,Basketball and Lacrosee leagues
Even then, not all the players are american especially in baseball and hockey.
God, Brits who live in the US are SOOOOO different than Brits in England, they actually see that america aint so bad, even if our pres is a complete Assmonkey
