Sometimes it depends on your baby. However, for me I had sex and my water broke, and they had me do tons of walking to help get my labor to progress. The pains are going to be there, just remember to try to breath through them. I had natural labor (except for the pitocin) and had my baby in 7 hours and after pitocin was given less than two hours. I hope your labor goes well. Relax as much as possible (which is easier said than done as well) when you are not having hard contractions. I will not have an epidural but if you feel you need one get one. I had my first with no drugs and plan to have my second and third babies with no drugs as long as things go well.

Get lots of sleep and take time during your day to put your feet up- must be above the level of the heart.
Eat smaller meals more often. Get lots of calcium..like milk, yougert etc.
Take time a few times a day to slowly inhale and slowly exhale.
Make sure you arn't constipated. Fruit & veggies and plenty of water helps with that

When you are in labor don't fight it. If you have a moniter hooked up you can track the contractions. Ride the contraction like a wave..see it peaking and just ride it knowing it is on the way down. When you are inbetween contractions - mellow yourself & rest

When labor gets more powerful it is very helpful to visualize what is happening. If the contraction makes you feel like your whole body is tensing with each wave of contraction. Just when you want to give up and scream-- don't- totally let your body go limp and let the contraction have full control over what it is doing. It takes some concentration but it can be done.

When you get to what is usually a frantic phase called the Transdition phase- Know in your brain that this is a good sign. It doesn't last for ever, but it is your body telling you that the baby will be born soon. Pushing isn't all that hard if you put yourself in to it. If you take medication you and the baby will be lethargic. Also with a spinal or caudal block you don't feel the birth of the baby, which is the most incredable experience on the planet. Once the baby is that near to birth your pain will ease because the pelvic area gets numb from the pressure.

It is hard to imagine that giving the pain full control while you not respond to the pain but let it happen actually makes labor less uncomfortable. Visulation also helps with the cervix dilating and thinning. If need be imagine pushing a basket ball through a small turtle neck sweater.

My babies were 9 and a half pounds and 8 plus And using the techinuqes helped me deliver quicker and with more ease than it would of been had I faught it.

there is no specific way to answer this question, remember to breath deep, push, close your eyes, focus on the feeling you'll have when you actually see the baby. I have had 2 children one was born 3 and a half years ago, the other turns one on the 30th of Nov. and I am due with my third on the 10th of November. So far, all of the births were exactly an hour 20 min long, and I took no pain medication for the process, for 2 reasons, A) not enough time to administer it, B) i don't want it anyway, through the years many women have given birth to babies without it. Why should I? and for another reason... I got pregnant, I wanted to feel the WHOLE experience...it is a bonding moment between mother and child. My husband and I wish you luck with your upcoming motherhood.

Ok, have your birth plan ready, but so not worry if you have to alter it.....just go wihtt he flow of your body and your baby. Practice those breating exercises with your birht partner, as they really do help. Pack plenty of water and sensible snacks to the early part of labour. Walk around LOTS with your partner, don't go to the hospital too soon or you will be bored, tired and restricted. Tell your midwife you are in v early phase.Have a nice bath at home, walk, sleep/dose, have nice company to pamper you like the venus you are! Then go into hosp (or home!) really relaxed just knowing that this is what you were made for.....you can get pregnant so you can give birth. You will be brilliant and so will your baby and you can do anything!!!! V Gd LUCK

if there was an answer to this, we would all be doing it!

Everyone has a different labour and birth, no two are the same, my cousin had her first baby in under 2 hours, me, I was in labour for 26. You just cant tell Im afraid, just try and take things easy as poss, listen to the midwife, and just take things as they come.

I hope you have a safe delivery, thats all that matters at the end of the day, the pain and everything else is totally worth it when you have your healthy baby in your arms.

Good luck,

lozz xx

When you go into labor - walk as much as possible - it will help you dialate (compared to lying in bed) - let gravity do a lot of the work!
Also - no epidural, no drugs, stay hydrated and rest when you can. (I know I'm telling you to walk and to rest - do some of both!) Ask who ever is delivering the baby to use perineal massage (preferably with olive oil) - helps reduce the risk of tearing and is much more comfortable when baby is crowning. Say no to episiotomy, unless there is an emergency. Relax through contractions, breathe - focus on opening up and letting the baby come. Don't think of pain - think of all the good work your body is doing to bring your baby into the world.
Best Wishes!

There is not an answer for your question. All babies and moms are different. My first child took 27 hours to decide to be born, 17 of which was hard labor, I was passing out between pushing because I was so worn down and exhausted. My second child took 25 minutes and I only pushed once. My third child took 10 hours. They are all different honey, you will be just fine!! People have been having babies for hundreds of years.

BTW, congratulations on the soon-to-be new member of the family! They are a joy.

My due date was Sept 30th, and my son just didnt' want to come out. So at 41 weeks on a Friday, they were going to induce at 9am. The night before however, I went into labor at 1am. (I had tried everything-long walks, driving over bumpy roads, they stripped my membranes, sex, etc.) My labor- total of 19 hrs then a c-section because he was turned the wrong way and ended up weighing 9lbs 10oz. We had no clue he'd be that big. Our doctor kept saying that babies come when THEY want to come, and really there's nothing you can do. For pain- epidural- I highly recommend it. I wasn't planning on getting it until I was in active labor. THen I needed it because it was extremely painful and they used pitocin to try to speed things along, so that made it hurt even worse.

Good luck though- I know it's tough waiting when you are that close!

Well I know it seems like forever away! Just keep eating healthy and walk, alot! Walking can help progress the labor along sometimes and it will help you in labor too. I just had my baby a week and 2 days ago. She was 3 days early, seemed like everyday just drug and drug! Just rest as much as you can, your going to need it! As for labor, its not as bad as I thought it would be. The only drugs I had was something to help me sleep through some of the contractions. I didnt have any pain relief, at all and surprisingly enough I was just fine. They had to give me pitosin to speed the labor along which makes your contractions worse but they werent to the point I couldnt handle them. You just have to consentrate on your breathing and try to stay as relaxed as possible. I always thought that pushing her out would be the most painful but it felt so good to push! And it went really fast for me. I hope you are as lucky as I was! Good luck and congrats!!!!!
