1. If your motherboard is ONLY capable of using PC2-4300, it will just downclock any PC2-5300 that you put in there.
2. If you mix the two, BIOS will just synchronize their speed to that of the lowest which is the PC2-4300; even if board is compatible w/ PC2-5300.

I think you mean pc2 4200 and yes most often it is, but I recommend checking at www.crucial.com that your computer can take both types before trying to get both in there. They can run together as long as your computer supports it, but as always it is best to just get one or the other.

over the past 12 months i have had comparability issues with Kingston and Samsung ram mix these two just don't work, this may be the issue in your case

As long as the pin set matchs...You can plug it in. then the computer will downclock it to the correct values.
