RAM is too small and Vista is stealing almost everything. Increase RAM. 2x1Gb (dual channel) is best for Vista.

Your question is somewhat confusing, and I could (and will!) interpret it in different ways.
1) You had 512 MB in RAM, but only 84 MB is now being registered total.
Right-click My Computer and choose properties to verify this. It's a hardware failure. Your computer is faulty, and you should seek to return it under warranty. If it was second-hand, try and obtain a refund.
2) You have 512 MB of RAM, but only 84 MB is available.
Ctrl+Shift+Esc should reveal this. Unfortunately, Vista runs like a dog without a good few gigabytes of RAM for it to slouch on. Pulling the plug on Aero and other RAM-hogging programs should help reduce RAM usage in your system. The other alternatives are to upgrade the RAM, use one of these new-fangled ReadyBoost memory sticks, or rollback to XP for less RAM usage.
3) You are running out of hard disk space
RAM and the hard disk are completely separate. If you're running out of the latter, then you will need to delete some files to free up space. Unfortunately most notebooks do not come with very sizeable hard drives as standard, as the technology behind them is still rather expensive. Upgrading it might be a possibility, or you could invest in an external hard drive for extra storage.

Ok - stop panicking!
RAM - this is the MEMORY of your machine - 512 is very low for a machine these days and you would be well advised to buy some additional memory to add to what you already have.
The MEMORY does not hold your data and programs - that is the hard disk that does that - if the machine was new it is likely you have over 100Gb of disk space - I think the smallest you get these days is 120Gb.
Get more memory (have a look at the HP site or the site you bought your machine from) - it will help speed your machine up - but it is very unlikely you have run out ouf disk space!!

If this is a second hand computer, I can safely say you've been ripped off. See, this is what happens when you go for cheap stuff. I dont understand you had 512mb and now you have 84. That dont make sense. But you need to get it checked up. If you bought new from a store you're still under warranty.
Also have you been messing with the pagefile to add more to memory to speed things up?

as said before.. perhaps look at the HP site,
there is a hidden partition on the hard drive for recovery, u just need to download the boot image off the HP site to recover that.
as for the memory.. u still have 512mb? maybe your on about FREE space.. do u have a lot of things running in the background?
i don't think makers should sell laptops with anything LESS than 1gb these days anyway..
try also
http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/
registry and cleaner tabs
but hopefully u run a decent anti virus + firewall..
perhaps look at your system resources, maybe your running things that take a lot of memory in the background?
i.e. on the task bar etc.

if you don't have a recovery partition or recovery discs contact HP total care
u can also upgrade RAM and hard drive capacity if you want to
from any computer's store
but be carful because if you open the computer's case your warrenty will not be valid any more

Go to system and restore to the original settings, that will re-install everything because really for this you don't need them is one great feature that windows vista has, its already installed in your computer, if it doesn't work, when you bought it there was a disc in the package that said windows vista, thats a generic disc so all you need when installing is to provide the key that comes stuck on the pc its on a label. and thats it.

That's strange. I don't think RAM actually decreases though you sometimes need more as your system clogs up with junk.
You haven't got Norton Systemworks by any chance, have you? It's a killer. If the shop you bought it from can't help you, there are loads of small self-employed computer experts out there who should be able to sort it out - for a fee.

you should purchase ram at very almost any pc keep or on line. For google the quest term may well be pc memory card or some thing like that or pc RAM Card. you in basic terms placed it into the PCI slot (many times there are training with it)

I suggest you seek help from someone who knows what they're doing. Your question suggests you haven't got a clue and if you start messing with it you'll likely screw it completely.
