Since there have been no hitter-pitchers of note (except Kieschnick, and he clearly wasn't the best player), who has done what Bonds has done, and done it better?
You cannot push Bonds aside unless you have another name to put in his place.
-----
To expand just a bit: Bonds isn't nearly the player he was ten years ago, and he is STILL one of the better hitters in the game. In his prime he was awesome, and regardless of how he achieved his 2001-04 MVP seasons, he deserved each one of those trophies -- no one else was even close to him. (Maybe Al.) Bonds was the consummate player -- hit, hit for power, ran, fielded, threw, and demonstrated strike zone discipline like no one else and few others in history. He was a SIX tool player, he was electric to watch, he could change a game instantly. That he now has a piddling few more homers than Aaron is interesting, but that achievement isn't what made him great -- it simply validates (further) how great he has been.
Griffey was great. Bonds was better.

Wowwww... Barry Bonds is considered a 5 tool player.... Have you seen his fielding, arm, and speed, power, contact, and avaible to get tons of walk before he got old?(My bad, chipmaker accidently mistakened you for that other guy)
Barry Bonds is the best and maybe the greatest... Who seen a guy with these stats:
a 700 hr , 2000 walks, 514 SB, and almost 3000 hit
7 time MVP... Oldest NL Batting Champion at 38.... 8 time gold glover (It might be 9....)
UNITED check your facts b4 you post!
He still might be considered great even without the steroids....
Guilty until proven innoncent.... One of our mottos isn't it?
He's not guilty yet even if it is overwhelming... Respect him as a player not by his personality, I mean you can say Ken Jr. is better or that Hank is the greatest, I respect your opinion...
I agree Vlad is underrated and so is Matt Holiday!

Bonds is not a good hitter, he's a GREAT hitter. What are you people thinking?
United - He has 9 Gold Gloves (field),a .298 lifetime average (hit), and 514 steals (run). Your only valid point is being a good teammate - although he did carry the Giants the past decade.
He's without a doubt the best all-around player of this generation, and arguably of all time.

Depends on who's generation your in. A-Rod's #'s have been better in every category year for year. Barry Bonds does own one dubious distinction however. He is the only player in Major League history whose head stopped growing and then started growing again after 7 years (as evidence by his batting helmet), that's curious

You're right he is good but not the greatest of our generation, my vote is for Ken Griffey Jr. Go Reds! Griif was the best player in the 90's and the last two years he's looked great so my vote is for my main man KGJ. Go Reds!

Home run hitters are seldom great baseball players. The best players can field, hit, run, and be a good team player. Just having a record in one category does not make you a great player.
Bonds is a good hitter, but does not compare to others who are more widely talented.

I dig Hank Aaron. He made all those hits without performance enhancing steroids. Bonds makes me sick.

Vlad Guerrero is severely underrated don't forget about him and his skills. All bonds does is walk or hit it out of the park there is no in between with him and his defensive skills have diminished severely. He was good in his day but with the cloud of steroids over him I have my doubts about how good he really is.
