My little buddy goes up to the top of the tank and floats there for extended periods. He isn't tilted and doesn't seem off-balance when he does this, and I can still see him breathing through his mouth. He swims normally around the tank (2.5 gal) without any problems. I know that Bettas are labyrinth fish which breathe normal air like we do, but he's staying up at the top for several minutes at a time. Is this normal? Also, he has not been eating his pellets and I really don't know when I'll get a chance to go to the pet store to get a different kind (such is life as a college freshman). I've read that bettas are very picky eaters. Will he eat if he gets too hungry, even if he doesn't like the food? I don't want my new lil friend to starve to death! :(

P.S. : Thanks very much to all the people who answered my previous question. I appreciate the help and he seems to be doing better now that I have a lamp over his tank. :)

Well, from your other Q i know, that you just got your betta, so it's absolutely normal that he won't eat

It can take up to 10 days before he really starts eating regularly since he needs to get used to his new environment

Also once he starts eating, only feed him about 3 pellets twice a day and fast him for 1 whole day outa the week, that way you can prevent constipation

Hope that helps
Good luck

Edit*
Also get him a live plant, they love to rest on them

Don't worry about it - these guys are top dwellers, and the surface is where most of their food comes from - what he is doing is behaving naturally.

Feed him the pellets. If he doesn't eat it, remove them and try again the next day. Keep doing this. It takes weeks for them to starve to death and it's rare that they won't start eating after a week or so of fasting.

If he's already gone a week without eating, perhaps it's best to try a flake instead. Bloodworms (which are mosquito larva) are a great supplement, but not a great long term staple diet.

properly, i circulate to circulate over it back whether it never is going everywhere: bettas are tropical fish that choose genuine tanks with warmers and filters, and partial water variations somewhat then finished water variations - each thing a tropical fish desires - as they are tropical fish. they do no longer do properly otherwise, no longer remember what thousands of erroneous human beings think of. Your eating habitual is positive and does no longer be the difficulty. I won't circulate into greater element for the reason that i detect human beings want denial and it is going nowhere, so in case you like greater information on information in this fish, somewhat then delusion and hearsay, enable me understand. sturdy success

When you go to the pet stores, try getting some live bloodworms or mosquito larvae.

its normal for them to go to the top, that means theyre extremely healthy
but you might want to start buying this one kind of beta food, its some plants or worms or something but they love it, and it floats for hours on end
also you might want to put your beta in a smaller tank, they like to be in small areas
