The current Cincinnati Reds are NOT the same franchise as the original Red/Red Stockings. The current Cincinnati Reds were established in 1882.
The oldest continuously run franchises are the Atlanta Braves (Milwaukee Braves, Boston Braves, Boston Bees, Boston Rustlers, Boston Doves, Boston Beaneaters, and Boston Red Caps) and the Chicago Cubs (Chicago Orphans, Chicago Colts, and Chicago White Stockings) - both were established in 1876.

EDIT: prince - you're right about the Reds, but the Pirates were established in 1882.

I live right outside of Las Vegas, coached high school baseball in the area, and can tell you straight up that they are very much fair weather fans there. I would love nothing more than to be able to drive less than 50 miles to watch Major League action, but I am a realist, as well. The plan just doesn't pan out, and the franchise would go the way of the old Seattle Pilots to Milwaukee Brewers plan. Simply look up the history of sports franchises in Sin City, and you will see a glaring fact: Unless a team wins consistently there, people stay away in droves. I know that is not going to be a popular response, but it is the truth. A major league team of any sport would have to have their collective heads examined to invest that much money in a city full or people that will not support them through thick and thin. Chicago Cubs fans they are not, and the gambling stigma on any team there should be enough for any team to seriously reconsider making their home there....It would be a problem even if there was a ban on betting on that particular team. Let's say a franchise was placed there. The construction of a stadium would not be much of a problem due to all the money in the area. It would have to either a be another domed thing like that in Phoenix, or a retractable roof stadium, because the temperatures are not conducive to anything in the summer but lying under the air conditioner. The problem would not be with the construction of the stadium, then, but with the filling of those seats. Would you go all the way to Las Vegas to gamble, look at pretty women, see the shows, then take time out of perhaps your only visit ever to that city to go watch the Washington Nationals play the host city...let's see... the "Las Vegas Strippers"? I SINcerely doubt it. It would have to be a major draw - like the Dodgers, Braves, or Mets to fill the seats regularly, and they can't play the Dodgers, Braves, and Mets 81 games a year. Las Vegas as a Major League city simply isn't realistic, I'm afraid, and should anyone be foolhardy enough to attempt a franchise there, they will end up being sorry. Another fact and a little history lesson is called for here: They practically have to give tickets away to games there unless the team - in whatever sport - is winning. Ask the post-Tarkanian UNLV Rebels basketball team, or the University's football team. Or the Utah Jazz, or the Rattlers, Quicksilvers, DustDevils, Outlaws, Posse, etc, etc, etc! Great idea for more entertainment in the Las Vegas Valley, but in the long run it would fail. Sorry, but that's the facts, Jack!

Atlanta Braves are the oldest continues team, started in 1871, the Chicago Cubs would be with them but they lost 2 years to the Great Chicago Fire, they did not play in 1872 and 1873. Both the Braves and Cubs were original members of the National League formed in 1876.

The Atlanta Braves, founded as the Boston Red Stockings in 1871, are the oldest continuously operating team. They have some links to the first professional team, the Cincinnati Red Stockings, who went pro in 1869 but folded the following year. (The current Cincinnati Reds was founded in either 1876 or 1882 and has no direct link to the earlier team.)
The Chicago Cubs were also founded in 1871 (as the Chicago White Stockings), but they didn't play in '72 and '73 because their field and equipment were destroyed in the Great Chicago Fire.
Both the White and Red Stockings started in the National Association and joined the National League when it was formed in 1876.

Why do these idiots always say the Reds? Cincinnati had the first professional team, but the Reds are the 4th incarnation, granted a National League Franchise in 1892.
The Pirates, Cubs and Braves are still original teams (albeit not original names) from the first 1876 NL charter.

Cincinnati was the first professional team founded in 1869. They played two seasons before being dissolved. It was not the fore runner of the current Cincinnati team.
