Mandela, although in later years a great advocate for peace and forgiveness started out as the leader of ANCs armed wing. It is kind of like the IRA of South Africa. He was imprisoned for Sabotage, Treason (helping with a foreign invasion of South Africa) both of which are a capital crimes, meaning that they carry a death sentence. Mandela and all but one of his co-defendants was sentanced to life imprisonment.
I know that he blew up some railways and made plans for a guerrilla war aginst the government.

He was a terrorist, and believed in violence against the government to achieve his political aims of human and democratic rights for native South Africans. He was caught, tried, and jailed.

Later events proved that he had been wrong, and that non-violent methods had achieved his aims better than violent ones. I think that he had the courage to say so.
