I thought for sure you were wrong, but I just went to my state's (CT) DOL website, and, by George! you're right.... there is no state or federal protection against discrimination based on sexual orientation. Sex (meaning gender), creed, color, national origin, etc., but not sexual orientation.
I think that's a shame.

I did know that. There are only 20 states where an employee is protected from being fired because of his/her sexual orientation.
Someday, probably sooner than you think, gay employees will be constitutionally protected. After all, gay marriages are legal in some places already.
Some people feel a need to point fingers and discriminate others, they feel insecure in themselves (or in the case of homo-phobics) feel insecure in their own sexuality. Sex is still a taboo subject to many people, and to fire someone who has issues with it is the easiest thing to do.

Because African Americans started fighting (about 1850 or so) over a hundred years ago for thier rights and so have women (about 1890, I believe). It took a good 80 years or more for each of them to get those rights. Gays have not been fighting that long (only about 15 years or so). Patience grasshopper. It takes time for change.

In the state I live in, it's not legal to do that.
At least that's a gimme, any situation like that would result in a change in law. No way the supreme court would hold up a law allowing gay people to be fired just because of their sexual orientation.

Because a large majority of politicians and an equally large portion of the American government are narrow-minded Bible thumping twits?

The ACLU is taking notice of homosexual rights, but it's a very slow process. Keep hoping.

Because people don't know the definition to be free, and have rights.

most employment is "at will" so you can be fired for anything - you could even be fired for being straight!
