The state is Ohio.

The current arrangement is one of shared parenting with the mother as custodial parent. The father rarely sees the children and doesn't follow the visitation schedule. The mother is considering seeking full custody. The father might agree if he didn't have to pay support. He harbors a fair amount of bitterness toward paying anything to the mother. Clearly, he is missing the point that the money is for the children and in all honestly, doesn't make a dent in her household expenses.

The father has to pay child support ESPECIALLY if the mother has full custody. That money is to provide for the child. It's not payment for visitation.

Yes, in most cases. Both father and mother are responsible for the costs of raising the child. Therefore, he must pay child support. The child support will be lower if they share custody, higher if she has sole custody. There are, of course, other factors involved, such as number of other children being supported, daycare expense, medical insurance, etc.

The answer to this question can certainly change from state to state. If you identify the state you are in, the answer would be easier. I work for an attorney and we get many, many clients who have depended on the information someone else gives them. I always want to ask where the other person got his or her law degree. However, you may also go on-line regarding your own state's laws, statutes, etc. After searching the other sources, an attorney specializing in domestic law would certainly be your best source.

The more custody you have, the more the ex has to pay. You are doing more of the child-rearing, doctor-taking, homework-helping, lunch-making, check-writing, new school clothes-buying, field trip paying, laundry-doing and general kid-growing, so he has to pay for the pleasure of not being involved. Trust me, this is usually better for the kid, anyway!

Yes, and he should be happy to do so, if he pays child support and attempts to establish and maintain contact he may at some time get visitation rights.

It would seem logical and reasonable to assume that if a spouse doesn't have any rights concerning a matter, then they shouldn't have any responsibilities concerning that matter either. That isn't the case, however, especially when the spouse is male.

Unless he gave up all rights, he should still be liable for child support.
