Your rights would vary greatly depending on if he had grounds to fire you. You left that part out.

The boss would be within his rights to tell the staff not to speak to you about work related matters, but I don't see how he could enforce a casual conversation.

He does not have a legal right to demand this. What rights do you want? You can talk to anyone who will listen.
