as a Help Desk analyst. I have been in a complete different field for many years. I have my MCP and will hopefully be obtaining my MCSA and MCSE within maybe a few months. What should I expect to learn within this position? After maybe a year or two I plan on exploring my options because the company I joined does not have much room for advancement but I took the job to get my foot into the IT industry. It pays well and has great benefits. Is it fair to say that with the right training and experience I can possibly try to get a job as a systems administrator or a related position. Any advice will be great. Thanks in advance.

Through my previous positions I have a ton of customer service skills and also have some management experience. Iam not one of those super computer geeks but I am a quick learner and great with people.

I believe you will get a boat load of customer service experience, which will give you better people skills. With those skills honed you may want to look into some more direct management positions.

From where I sit, unless you want to do a lot of data entry , most administrators are involved in either 1st or 2nd line management or project management. There's a lot of room at the top these days as it's starting to become obvious that those super experienced computer people do not make very good managers, experience makes really good managers.

I do technical recruiting, so all I do all day is hire IT people!

Congrats on your new job!

If you want to look at the financially lucrative side of the industry, any IT job in a finance field tends to pay more than the others.

It's good to have a diverse set of skills, but don't get too wild, there's nothing more confusing than someone whos done 30569293 different things in different languages, because then you have no idea what you're supposed to do with them!

It's better to be really really great at one thing than mediocre in a lot.

I don't do a lot with System Admins, but I really hope this helped somehow!

The biggest thing you'll learn from this job is what problems people REALLY have, not just what bugs exist but how people use or misuse the technology. This will be very valuable to you in your IT career.

Having your foot in the door in an IT organization is good. Make sure that the people who do the hiring for the other positions know you're interested.

Good luck.
