4x speed overlapped and typically a motherboard supports either 2and 4x or 4 and 8x at a given voltage level given that the card was designed with both voltage keys supported. The incompatibility exists between a 2X and 8X with the 2X at a higer voltage level than the 8X. Bottomline, if your system was a 2X/4X compatible machine then you can not use a 4X/8X AGP card and vis-versa. since the card will not physically fit and if you did cram it in there the voltage level would not be correct.

Post your motherboard vendor and model number and we'll be able to check the vendor site for the details. You may also be able to tell by checking the BIOS to see if you can manually force the AGP setting (I'm not sure if this only list the valid settings as my older PC supported up to AGP 8x and the lower versions)
