a palace is a special building for recreation and pleasure, normally for balls and dining and luxuriant housing.

A castle is a large fortress, usually containing a palace, and normally has spiraling towers as well as a courtyard, and is frequently surrounded by a mote or by a cliff.

A fortress is a very large fort, and can be used as a word to describe a safe haven and is extremely difficult to break in to,

A fort can be large, it can be small as a bunker in some cases. It is a protected area where militaristic plans can be made and exectuted, provide shelter and sometimes are only temporary lodgings

A castle is a fortified house or residence. A king would live in a castle if he were involved in active warfare. A fort or fortress would not necessarily be residences, or places that you would live an everyday life as a king.

A palace generally would not serve any warfare needs as it is merely a lavish home!
