It's the Matthew Shepard Act.

Ah... ok I see your points. So basically you believe regardless of why or who they did the crime to they should get the same result.
I believe though that there would be less hate crimes if this was passed. Just my opinion.

I think it's long overdue.

Bills like this are devisive and serve no legitimate purpose. People who commit violent crimes should be punished the same regardless of why they committed the crime. If I walk out of a bar and get pounded and a gay dude walks out of a bar and gets pounded to the same degree, the perps should get the same punishment (I support stiffer sentences all around). If someone commits murder give them the chair or to appease the left, give them life in prison and I mean real life not life as defined for sentencing purposes.
Matthew Shepard allegedly wasnt even killed because he was gay but who knows. Does anyone care about the straight teen who was brutally raped and murdered by two gay men around the same time as the whole Shepard ordeal??? No on ever talks about that- I wonder why??? Doesnt fit the agenda I guess.

I am probably one of the few that feel this way but here goes. I do not hate crime law is good. All violent acts are based on hate. Having a law that says hurting someone while thinking a certain way, goes against our freedom of thought. I do not think we should be policing thought. If we in forced the crime laws that existed before hate crime laws, people would have been punished appropriately for the action. I just feel that all violent acts are based on hate.

Probably not. I doubt Bush will sign it.

I hope it never becomes law. I don't think it's right to give out different sentences because of what a person may be thinking.

Imagine it being a federal crime if I use a slur before I punch you in the nose, but no federal crime is committed if I shoot your brother. Sounds twisted, but this is what will happen.

If I punch you, the crime is assault, and it should be tried by the state. I can't think of why this should be a federal crime. The punishment should be the same if I assaulted a straight guy or a gay guy. Why should they be any different?

I just asked about this days ago!
Thanks for the link, that's awesome!
I've been reading about this bill FOREVER, and it was finally passed by the Senate! Kick ***, that's what I have to say.

Boo to bush threatening veto, but such a strong support for it. Bush's veto could be overridden my opinion. That's awesome. Now I have something else I can add into my essay for gay marriage (well in a nutshell-- gay rights) (it's for my English class) woohoo!

It's been long overdue! It's about time people started getting charged for the actions that they do against other people, because of who they are. Good!!!
