I'm vain about more than my looks. If I were male, you'd call that ego. Egos can be inflated or healthy. They're inflated if you think you're better than you really are, they're healthy if you know your capabilities and are proud of them. Vanity works the same way.

Vanity does traditionally hold more negative connotation with it than ego does. If you do something 'in vain', you do it in futility. Vanity comes from these roots but it, like all words, is changing. It can now mean, among other things, wanting/trying to be beautiful and feeling that you deserve to be. Personally, I associate vanity more with pride in my strengths and accomplishments.

I wouldn't call vanity medicine or a carrot trick. I don't think it's something that can be used as a crutch or an incentive. It's either present, as something that you feel, or it isn't.

P.S. Your question reminded me of Vanity Smurf (who's male, by the way).

Smile. As usual, you are a master at asking clever questions. Bravo! Vanity at different levels is something all humans are cursed with. Women are inflicted with it more, simply because we are judged by our appearance more than men are. In my humble opinion, professionally successful women are more self indulgent and vane, because they have resources to spend on it. Self esteem has very little to do with vanity, it is in the way we feel inside. It manifests itself in the way we walk, talk and generally behave in public and private... You do know what I am talking about... or don't you? Smile.

Women develop a high self esteem due to being happy with whom they are. Vanity is a completely different ball of wax.

There is a difference between vanity and self-love. When you love yourself you have higher self esteem.

Sometimes vanity is a result of overcompensation for insecurities---vanity doesn't have much to do with self esteem IMO.
