"It is a bad plan that admits no modification." (I don't know where this quote came from, but I often remember it.)
You're the only one who knows when to adhere to your goals or make adjustments.
Opposition is opportunity for options.
I only "drop it" (not back down) if I've smashed my head in a brick wall enough to know it's time to cut my losses.
& furthermore! I don't believe in anything being "fixed" (except that durned brick wall which is very rare).

Edit: Just looked at the answers, & Dennis R is close. I think the quote is "Publiliw (?) Syrin." Doesn't really matter who; I think it's wise....

During my life, it was easier to adhere to goals when I was younger.
Like one year my goal was to learn how to ride a motorcycle and that was easy.
But after I got married and had kids, it became very hard to keep a plan going in the original direction.
Sometimes adjustments have to be made just to be able to pull the thing off at all.
Backing down and pushing on depends what the plan was in the first place.
Sometimes a situation arises when you just have to forget about the whole thing. Like getting laid off of a job and having no income.
Eventually my plans are carried out though it may be years later.
The most important thing to remember is if you make plans to visit an old person, be sure you carry out the plan because they may not be around much longer. That is one thing I always do, if I have the feeling I want to see an old person I know, I do it as soon as possible.

A good plan consists of both.
You fix the ' direction ' you want to take and give enough leeway
for changing circumstances.
Let me give you a bad example,
I always used to hitch - hike from Amsterdam down south for a
holiday. ( last time 3 years ago ).
I would take the road from the ring leading to the south, and commit myself to taking any lift going in that direction.
Could be direction Calais, or Paris, or Munich, or Luxembourg.
I'd hold out a sign depicting a sun, a clear symbol in rainy gray Holland......So the direction is obvious, the destination
always a mystery. and I have ended up in the strangest places, always listening to the tips of the people who picked
me up.
If you don't like where you end up after a day. you pack up your gear and move on, otherwise you enjoy, linger and explore.
Oppositions ?, I'm as stubborn as a mule if I find a spot and
get the old sign out and nobody stops, I just hoist my backpack and start walking in the direction I intended to go.
Sometimes it's stupid and counterproductive because the next car could well stop and the next favorable spot may be
miles away , But I'll never backtrack !, it's like admitting defeat
But it's still my favorite way of traveling, I practice my languages making conversations and I love the uncertainty
of not knowing at all where I'll rest my weary head at night.
In the end I think it boils down on your personality, I love chaos
and randomness because it keeps the adrenalin flowing.
But I can well understand others would find such an approach
disturbing, if not insane.
I'm a born Tactician, and absolutely no Strategist.

Plans should always be flexible.

It's a bad plan that cannot be changed. I think that's a famous quote from some long time in the past.

You always need to have contingency in a plan which implies a degree of change.

Adherence to goals, making adjustments and our reaction to those (give up or push on) must depend on an objective view of the situation in the present time and a robust consideration of the likely impacts of change.

I think it is good to adhere to your goals I mean why set goals if U are not going to try and accomplish them. I think it is all ways good to make adjustments. If U do the same thing over and over again it tends to get boring. Besides if U don't make said adjustments then life will tend to get a little stuffy and all so change is good. U don't have to make big changes just small stuff I really don't know it all depends on what oppositions

Always wise to have a goal in mind, plan. The end always in sight. But the sometimes it is very important to be able to adjust that goal, until you can manage to get it back on track, but never letting the final goal out of sight. When push comes to shove it may be that you will have to do both to manage your plans through the bottle neck. If the goal/plan appears to always shift forward, then makes sure you don't let it out of you range, so that you can keep moving with it in any direction.

Eventually you will win. It is said those that fail only fail because of one reason.................they did not see it through
to the end.

Plans should be flexible.... goals are the ones that should be fixed until reached...
We should never forgot what we are trying to accomplish... but we must keep our plans of reaching it always flexible...

Everything we do in life is directly or indirectly related to social interaction, sometimes competition, friendship, etc... and also directly related to a constant ever-changing environment...

Therefore our plans should be flexible enough to handle change in the environment and in other people's ideas and cultures...

We need to adapt to the current situations and people in order to finally get the outcome we want....

A really really good book about it is "The Art of War", which explains really well how important is to have an attitude of adaptation when competing or dealing with others in order to win or reach what we want...

We must take advantage of opportunities that often come as surprises and adapt our plans to these new opportunities...

Hope that helps!

Generally, a plan must be fixed because you have to set it as your goal otherwise it will not be pushed through. Along the way when the project has been started one could make modification or innovations if it sound to be good and for the betterment of the project. Flexibility is required to suit one's needs. We must not be confined to a specific plan because there are new and vrilliant ideas along its course.

Have a wonderful day!

"Plans are of little importance, but planning is essential"...Winston Churchill. Plans are objects or objectives of where we want to be or where we want to go. There is no right, wrong or better way to get there and they are not cast in stone. It's people that are fixed or flexible. We can choose to back down, push through, beat our head against a wall or simply re-route. As times, people, situations and circumstances change, so may goals.

Hey Enki, how's it going?

People are always setting plans and goals and wanting to do everything by a certain time. Plans need to be flexible because sometimes, things that aren't expected happen and your plans have to be modified.
Oppositions may make me take a step back, but then I get even more determined to follow through and go further.
