We would take road trips to places that were a day's drive away. I'd always packed sandwiches for the trip and the kids brought their books. We went to places like Sault St Marie and Mt Rushmore so there was an element if learning in what we saw - even though the kids didn't realize it.

We would take our children to a cabin in Lake of the Ozarks. We also had many trips to theme parks in the Midwest, which we still do with our grown children, their spouses, and our grandchildren. Though my wife and myself have long out grown riding a lot of the rides we have a great time with all the family (seventeen of all together) on our annual trips. The grandchildren like our big family trips so well, that they always ask their parents where all the rest of the family is when each individual family goes on their own family trips.

We went camping a lot. Packed up the tent, coolers, sleeping bags and all. No way would I sleep in a tent on the ground now though!
It does sound like you need to get away. I'm sure you will find all ages at club med! Go for it!!

We had a slide in sleeper for the truck and would go to Yellowstone Park and then off to the Oregon Beach. We also had a tent camper that we used in the winter and took the kids hunting and fishing. Lots of day trips to lakes to fish and to the Craters of The Moon and Ice Caves, Teton National Park, Rodeo's in Wyoming and Oregon and Idaho. good luck with your pending man hunt. ;0)

We did a lot of driving around the U.S.; I've literally driven across the country over time - Virginia and Maryland on the east, all the way to Washington state in the west. Haven't made it to Alaska yet, but I'm not dead yet ;-)

Camping in the bush. You could safely do that when our kids were little - wouldn't do it now though. It's strictly a caravan park now where there's lots of people around.

We have taken our kids to the indoor water parks, in northern michigan on several occasions the one park you cant get into unless you geta room, and the other you can, they are fun for the kids, and the adults, and we have taken them to several different "tourist attractions" and they have fun learning about the history, and all the other stuff we do. Almost nothing in northern michigan is formal.
hope this helped
