I ahve a hard time describing spatial relationships, bt i would really like to know if this is possible. I want the colors to show up in rows, but to continue them around so that there is an outside and an inside, not a front and a back.

Yes, it is possible.
It is easier to do it if you can fit your finger in the tube, and also when you use a strong core (wire?)

To get the colours spiraling is harder, but not impossible. You can try to tie 3 half knots, so the strings move farther.

I will search for a picture on the net for you, (the one I had on-line is lost because of Yahoo photos closing down.) When I have it I'll come back to add it here.

Here is a picture I took of a neck lace I made, with scoubidou string, (which is like craft-lace)

I used one string going round all the time, the other strings going across almost straight down, but if you use the diagonal way they often use, you can also go round and the strings will spiral more.
In the necklace I did one row with the horizontal string showing, and one row with the vertical strings showing.
