According to this article http://nymag.com/fashion/features/07/28502/ the top ten New York fashion trends are:
1. Slim silhouette (belted or tailored clothing)
2. Tweed.
3. Chunky sweaters
4. Menswear style pants
5. Zippers on just about anything
6. Hats
7. Clashing - eg. wear black and blue
8. Platforms and high heels
9. Sequins and metallics
10. Feather trim
Usually what we see on runways isn't what gets worn in the real world, because it's usually just not that practical. Here is a really useful guide from Elle Magazine where they show what real people are wearing on the street. http://www.elle.com/streetchic/11449/street-chic-new-york.html
I'm not sure what stores are selling the kinds of clothes you will want or what your personal style is, but maybe you will find some inspiration in these guides. Don't forget it gets really cold in the winter so the most important items to buy are a warm coat (tweed, plaid and menswear prints are HOT this year), some cozy boots (ankle boots are in, but I recommend higher ones at least halfway to the knee or higher to keep your legs from freezing- I wear my knee high boots with my pants over them) and some gloves, a hat and scarf. You'll also need warm sweaters and some tanks and long-sleeve t shirts to layer under them. Hoodies are also popular, and hooded sweaters are a great investment because you can pull the hood up if you get cold.
Good luck with your move! Hope you like New York.

I lived in NJ, but now live in FL. jeans are always good. long sleeved shirts and sweatshirts. warm shoes and socks. a down jacket, knit hat and mittens or gloves. boots with some kind of lining, either fur or wool. what's in style depends on what part of NY you're moving to.

it's all about the boots when it comes to winter and your coat. stiletto boots are always in (ankle length, mid calf or knee high- doesn't matter), or snowboots that have fur at the top and cute strings and tassles, leather or suede- either one when it comes to boots, and it's cute to have a matching coat. you must have a long coat, a medium length, and a short in your closet. I have a medium length tan suede coat with knee high suede boots, a cute black short puff coat with black snowboots with gray fur and gray tassles, etc.
