I want to replace sliding closet doors with the bifold type of doors. How hard are these to install? I'm a bit of a do it yourselver but by no means am I a pro. Is this something I should attempt to do myself? Are there tips or suggestions or things to be aware of before I attempt this project? Any advice about measuring or installation will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance...

Arghhh Hi Bal Harbor lass. :)

Thank you, for wanting to replace sliding doors, first of all. I've never been able to figure out why they weren't installed so that the doors vanished into the interior of the closet as opposed to just one or the other side of the opening.

Bifolds aren't my fave either but I do have a suggestion. They are likely less irritating to install than are the sliders for one thing... BUT the best FIT and action/response will come from those that have Floor track as well as top track.

I'll assume for now that the opening to the closet is 2 x 4 framing with a total of 1 inch of drywall. I'd install the top track to flush with the inside wall of the closet. (Just a personal preference allowing approx. 4 extra inches of free space in the room when the doors are open, at their hinge point.)

Then I'd use a straight edge that would span the opening on the floor and install the floor track butted to it. From there it's a matter of installing the doors at the pivot points, properly, and getting the glide pins in place.

I think even for a DIY with no experience it shouldn't need to be said that you should measure; or NOT buy double bifolds for a 60 inch opening when your opening might only be 48 inches.

Any decent bifold "KITS" will have pretty clear instructions.

It's not too hard. Obviously make sure to carefully measure the height (and width) - keeping in mind that there will be a track bolted to the top - and you want a little gap at the bottom.

If you have any bifold doors anywhere else in your house (or look at someone elses house) you can get an idea of how everything works. The most important thing is getting everything installed nice and straight, and then aligning the doors so that they open and close smoothly and meet square in the middle.

They require a track and are not terribly hard to install Just follow the package directions and ask the sales persons for additional tips. Measure the opening carefully and make sure your new doors fully closed are not to wide or narrow.

My personal experiences have been in cases of this nature is to take at least one door with me to Home Depot so that they can SEE what it is that you are talking about. Wow what a difference it makes when you take the necessary part with you so that you can match what it is that youare trying to convey. You may want to recess the hinge or there maybe other factors involved like what it is made of and what you are trying to attach it to etc. ]Good luck
