I don't understand it, for myself. I enjoy a glass of wine with a nice dinner, but I would never drink in excess.
I have been a designated driver among my friends for years, although as those around me are maturing, I haven't had to play that role very frequently.
I do know that alcohol can be addicting, and some people think that that feeling of having a few drinks will cause them to be more relaxed in stressful situations. Those of us around them could tell them that they actually end up looking ridiculous and uneducated, in many ways.
I also know that some people are more susceptible to alcoholism and other additions than others, and only some of the actual body chemical reasons are being looked at scientifically.
You are not alone in your take it or leave it attitude. I can enjoy tea, coffee and even milk and water just as much as an alcoholic choice and socialize and have just as much fun with any of the above.
The benefits far outweigh everything else, and no worries about driving home, being hung over or sick feeling and thinking about any behavior that I would worry about later on.
It really isn't a big deal, if you choose not to make it so.
Have a great day.

I'm not sure what the big deal is either but my husband is an alcoholic and drank for 4+ years of our almost 10 year relationship. I kind of feel like alcohol stole a lot from my life, though I can have a drink now an again with out a problem I rarely want one.

I love coffee.
To answer your question I guess drinking alcohol is a rite of passage into adulthood. I live in a college town where beer is sold by the keg and a wine called Two-Buck Chuck, they can't keep it on the shelves.
TV casts of campus events always show leering, goofy kids raising their glasses or bottles to the camera (look at me I"M DRINKING) .
Alcohol is cheap and readily attainable compared to other mind altering stuff.
I am an alcoholic, will be sober 13 yr on October 12. Sobriety is a hoot !

Can't say for sure since I'm not a big drinker either, but I have a lot of friends who drink alcohol to help them relax. Alcohol is depressant so it causes your body to slow down and your muscles to relax. It's also an inhibitor and I know some people who say it's easier to let loose and have a good time if they've been drinking beer or mixed drinks.

Well, I'm in tenth grade so it's a big deal to most people, but I've never drunken before. It's not that I don't plan to, it's just that I think it's dumb at this age. I see no point. I mean, I'm fourteen. I'll probably be more like you when I'm older, occasionally drinking. For now though, I just stay out of it.
I'd rather be able to remember the fun I have and know what I'm doing, personally.

I'm against it. Alcoholism runs in my family but the people I know that are not alcoholics and drink it do it for fun. You can get drunk and I guess "have a good time". There are much better ways to have a good time though in my opinion.

Lucky for you, if you can just drink it occasionally and its no big deal for you. I'm a recovering alcoholic, so it was the complete opposite for me; it was an obsession. No, you're not the only one though. I know a lot of people who just don't care to drink.

I don't drink because alcohol can kill me. I have heart problems. Used to be an alcoholic 12 years ago, now I'm paying the price.

Not at all, I never have liked alcohol and dont understand it much, I think that it is ok in moderation but when people start to abuse it until they are drunk and get in a car accident then they have gone to far, what ever happened to prohabition?
