It depends, if it's always like that then I find them to be self centered and very rude and I will cut them off and tell them life is not just about them all the time, if it's only on occasion then I'm OK with it and glad they feel like they can talk to me about what's bugging them.

It depends.
If something bad happened, like a family member died or their husband/wife just suddenly left them, i will let them talk as long as they want and THEN say something.
If they are Bragging or being mean, I make it known and request they stop or else i walk away.

The best way to stop them is grab the first opening in the conversation and start talking about you. As soon as they figure out you won't talk about them...they leave!
