OK my son nearly 3 months) has periods where he doesn't actively nurse but when I try to give him a soother he only chews on it and spits it out. I don't really want him to need or want a soother all the time, but I can't take being a live soother all the time. I have tried dipping the soother in gripe water that doesn't really work. I have tried all different kinds of soothers as well. If there is anyone who has had this problem or know any ideas to help him to not use me a a soother that would be great. Thanks! I didn't have this problem with my older son, but then I don't remember how old he was when he started to take a soother, and he didn't need it all the time either. He also wasn't using me a soother like my younger son is.

Best 'soother' is a baby's thumb. They can find it when they need it, never gets lost and you will not find yourself rooting around your baby bag or house trying to find the darn thing or getting up in the middle of the night when baby wakes up and wants it 'right now!'.

If baby won't take to his thumb, you could try a soother but it will be a real pain for you.

have you tried dipping it in breast milk? then push it toward the roof of his mouth (when something touches the roof of baby's mouth-the reflex is to suck.) Different babies prefer different ones so you may have to try several but use a small one for newborns.
I personally think a soother is better than the thumb. You can take the soother away when needed but you cant take the thumb away so it's that much harder to break him from it.
good luck

Maybe dip the soother into formula milk? One of my brothers as a baby used to spit out his soother all the time too, but my mother put honey on it and he would want it then. Otherwise, try a water-filled teething ring/rattle, which might be a good alternative.

dont give him one. if he doesnt want it he doesnt want it and i would want him to have one anyway. my son is 5 1.2 months and never took one and never will he hates it and gets mad when someone give him one. your son will be able to be more entertained soon so he wont be using you so much. i nwo what you're going through i nurse too but its so worth it than trying to get him off a paci. i hate seeing 3 years old trying to talk to you with a paci in their mouth NEVER GIVE YOUR BABY HONEY IT COULD KILL HER

my son never took to it. He never wanted his thumb either. Being a human paci is not the easiest thing, but you can t force him to accept one if he does not want it.
