Not quite.
Whether you know it or not, while you are sleeping your brain is still active. The mind never stops. You are still experiencing seeing images and feeling emotions.
Death on the other hand is complete and utter nothingness. No feelings, no emotions just black. But, then again it is not even pure blackness. Because you need a mind to portray what it is like to seeing pure nothingness, total blackness.
Your mind is no longer in existence.
Therefore in death you cease to exist totally, no blackness, no nothingness, it is just the end of the fallacy I call I am.
Edit: Don`t let "The One" fool you. In near death experiences people are not dead. All of the things that they think they see, are really hallucinations taking place the brain. There is no such thing as being almost dead. Either you are dead or you are alive. In NDE you are still alive, hence everything they see is taking place in the brain.

I understand your question, although, the majority who have answered do not.
Depending on how you die is what it's like. I would like to believe that someone does fall asleep and wake up somewhere other than Earth in the realm of the living. But that depends on your beleifs.
I would, however, like to clarify that "near death experiences" do happen because I've had one. You can literally be dead for a few minutes. Death is pronounced when the heart stops beating. It is possible to still have brain activity after death.
For example, during the Reign of Terror in France, King Louis XVI lost his head at the guillotine. It was recorded by a doctor there that the King blinked twice after his head was severed from his body. This means blood was still flowing and nerves were still active after his beheading. It actually takes the brain up to 3 minutes to stop functioning after death.
I wish to clarify that I mean initial death. Patients on a breathing machine experience real death (non-existant brain activity) and a faux-death, which is taking them off the venilator and allowing the breathing to stop and the heart to stop.
But never forget that the human body is very complex. We have been studying it for thousands of years and are no where near understanding how everything works. The brain is our biggest mystery still waiting to be solved.

not at all brother. I have been to the other side. You can see my medical records if you don't believe me. It is amazing on the other side. Don't be afraid for you will be with loved ones from your past. However you time will come when it comes don't rush into it. Live life and enjoy your gift that you received. So is it like sleep? no because you are capable of seeing things and communicating with others. Have faith and don't be afraid. We are all in this journey together.

No one knows forsure...This is where religion ties in. If religion is fake (which no one knows) I would imagine it would be like what it felt like before you were born...just nothing.
