I'm 6 weeks pregnant, and my fiance' smokes like a chimney. He smokes at least 2 packs a day! It didn't bother me that much, know the smoke almost chokes me to death. I almost puke when it gets in my face. How can I ask him to quit smoking around me, excpecially when we are about to get married. Any suggestions? I want to be nice about it.

Be honest & up front about it!! It's not just your health that is at risk, it's also your infant's!!! Secondhand smoke is very bad for developing babies!!! If he can't make that small sacrifice to smoke outside, then you should think twice about marrying this guy since marraige & fatherhood require much more demanding sacrifices.

Besides, marraige is a compromise & if you don't feel comfortable asking him about something small like this, then what will it be like later on with larger issues?

I don't think 'technological solutions' work. here is what I do if I want to avoid or stop a bad habit or continue a good one like working out. I visualize what will be the effect of my bad habit, like eating fatty foods. I picture myself as a fat slob with a big belly and think of all that flab flopping around and how awful I'd look. I focus on the image for about 20 minutes, and it cures me of any bad habit or an inkling to start one (I'm 6'2 and weigh 170) so I guess it works. The same thing for smoking. I picture myself getting lung cancer and dying a horrible death until I can actually feel the pain. That conditions me against taking up such bad habits. I have a good abiilty to make my fantasies seem real. I don't know if it would work for everyone

Are you kidding? Does he know the effects of second hand smoking on developing babies and newborns? You knew he smoked before you got engaged and got married....so it is doubtful that he will stop...My hubby use to smoke too...and when we started dating...I told him it was me or smoking...but he couldn't have both...He quit cold turkey.....been a 1 1/2 years now since he has smoked. And he doesn't miss it!

If you have to muster up courage to ask the man you want to marry to have concern for you and y'alls child, then there's a HUGE problem there and maybe you two aren't ready to marry.

It should require nothing more than "sweetie, I'd appreciate it if you wouldn't smoke around me while I'm pregnant, the 2nd hand smoke is worse for the fetus than it is for me"...

There's no being nice about it. If you don't learn how to communicate these things now it will get worse with other things. Its all about respect. If there isn't any it won't come out of thin air. Go earn that respect and set some healthy boundaries!

Very easily....quit smoking around me!! remind him that even though the baby isn't born yet she's still being exposed to that smoke...then completely clean and deoderize the house and stick to your guns!!

just say it. you do know that it can harm you and your baby. and you cannot blame him in the future if that happens, bc i want you to think back when you just wanted to be nice. this is a life you are bringing in this world that you hold inside of you. do you love your baby? do you love yourself? then you know what you need to do.

You need to be careful because of your baby. Has he talked to your doctor? He needs to realize that everything he is doing is going to affect the baby.

why do you need courage? just tell him that it's making you ill and would he please not smoke in the house. if he's a decent guy, it won't be any problem at all. if he b*tches about it, you'll know he only thinks of himself.

think of yourself if not the baby
the baby needs clean air to grow effectively ~ if not it will be damaged
