To tell you the truth, you usually don't regain respect.
Respect is earned, and it's a lot like your credit rating: it takes time to earn, and you can wind up losing every thing you've earned with a few stupid moves. Only, with credit you can rebuild your rating over time, and in a relationship that rarely ever happens.

Open minds are probably the only thing that will save a marriage that lacks respect. If you both talk and both listen and consider and try to accomodate the other it should build respect, and maybe even open up a new part of the relationship, making it more fulfilling.

you start by giving respect. it takes some work to change behavior but it has to start somewhere. get the communication flowing again.
